Malaysia: Growth in industrial production plummets in August

October 13, 2015

Industrial production increased 3.0% in August over the same month last year, which came in well below the 6.1% increase tallied in July. August’s reading was the lowest tally since July of last year and was driven by a contraction in the mining sector. On the other hand, the electricity sector expanded drastically in August, contrasting the decrease observed in July, while manufacturing also observed a mild increase.

On a monthly basis, industrial production fell 0.9%, after contracting 0.1% in July. As a result of August’s decrease, annual average growth in industrial production inched down from 5.6% in July to 5.3% in August.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will grow 3.9% in 2015, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s projection. In 2016, the panel expects industrial output to expand 4.4%.
