Malaysia: Growth in industrial production picks up in October

Industrial production increased 4.2% in October from the same month last year. The figure came in above the 3.1% increase registered in September and beat market expectations of a 3.1% rise. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the reading was mainly driven by strong growth in the manufacturing and mining sectors.

On a monthly basis, industrial production edged up 0.8% in October in seasonally-adjusted terms, which contrasted September’s 0.1% decrease. Annual average growth in industrial production inched down to 3.3% in October from September’s 3.4%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will grow 3.6 % in 2017, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s projection. In 2018, the panel expects industrial output to expand 3.9%.
