Malaysia: Growth in industrial production hits 16 month low in November

January 11, 2016

Industrial production increased 1.9% in November over the same month last year, the slowest growth since July 2014. The figure came in below the 4.2% increase tallied in October. November’s result was driven by the second consecutive contraction in the mining sector, which offset gains in the manufacturing and electrical components of the index.

On a monthly basis, industrial production fell 1.1%, which followed October’s 0.4% contraction. As a result of November’s monthly decrease, annual average growth in industrial production fell to 4.9% from October’s 5.2%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will grow 3.3% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. In 2017, the panel expects industrial output to expand 4.0%
