Malaysia Industrial production March 2017

Malaysia: Growth in industrial production edges down in March

May 11, 2017

Industrial production grew 4.6% in March from the same month of the previous year. The figure came in slightly below February’s 4.7% increase and undershot market expectations of a 4.8% rise. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, March’s expansion mainly reflected increases in the manufacturing and mining sectors. Meanwhile, the electricity sector contracted in the surveyed month, marking the worst performance since July 2015.

On a monthly basis, industrial production swung from a seasonally-adjusted 2.1% expansion in February to a 0.7% drop in March. Meanwhile, annual average growth in industrial production rose from 4.0% in February to 4.2% in March.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will grow 3.6% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. In 2018, the panel also expects industrial output to expand 3.5%.
