Malaysia Industrial production February 2017

Malaysia: Growth in industrial production accelerates in February

April 11, 2017

Industrial production grew 4.7% in February from the same month of the previous year. The figure came in above January’s 3.5% increase but failed to meet market expectations of a 6.1% rise. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, February’s expansion was broad-based as all the three sectors that make up the index recorded increases (mining, manufacturing and electricity).

On a monthly basis, industrial production swung from a seasonally-adjusted 1.1% drop in January to a 2.0% expansion in February, marking the highest figure in four months. Meanwhile, annual average growth in industrial production edged up to 4.0% in February from January’s 3.9%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will grow 3.6 % in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. In 2018, the panel also expects industrial output to expand 3.5%.
