Korea Business Confidence March 2017

Korea: Business confidence rises in March to highest level since May 2015

February 28, 2016

The Bank of Korea’s forward-looking business confidence indicator (BSI) for the manufacturing sector rose from 76.0 points in February to 81.0 points in March—the highest reading since May 2015. Despite the increase, the indicator remains firmly entrenched below the 100-point threshold, signaling that businesses are more pessimistic than optimistic.

Looking at the details, business sentiment among both domestic-oriented firms and exporting businesses improved considerably from the previous month, reflecting their perceptions that domestic demand and exports will pick up in the coming months.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect fixed investment to expand 3.1% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. In 2018, the panel expects growth in fixed investment to increase 2.6%.
