October 16, 2017

Industrial production grew 6.9% in September over the same month last year, which marks a notable drop from August’s over 16-year high of 14.4%.

The slowdown was broad-based, with all sectors growing at a slower annual rate in September compared to August. The mining sector recorded the biggest fall, expanding at less than half the pace than in August, albeit still growing at a double-digit rate. Manufacturing output also expanded at less than half the annual rate than in the previous month. Meanwhile, declines in the growth of the electricity supply, gas, steam and air conditioning, and water supply sectors were more moderate.

Annual average industrial production growth increased to an over six-year high of 6.6% in September from 6.0% in August.

FocusEconomics panelists expect industrial production to expand 5.5% in 2018, which is up 0.9 percentage points from last month’s projection. For 2019, panelists expect industrial production growth to slow to 3.0%.
