Japan: Inflation continues to rise in August

September 30, 2011

In August, the core consumer price index, which excludes volatile fresh food prices, was flat compared with the previous month, which was down from the 0.1% increase tallied in July. Annual core inflation inched up from 0.1% in July to 0.2% in August, overshooting market expectations of a 0.1% rate. Inflation continued to rise on the back of higher energy prices. Meanwhile, annual overall inflation grew at the same rate of 0.2% recorded in July, which represented the second consecutive positive reading since December 2008.
