Italy: Inflation moderates somewhat in March

March 31, 2017

According to provisional data released by the National Statistical Institute (Istat), consumer prices in Italy stayed flat on a monthly basis in March, down from February’s 0.4% increase and the lowest result in four months. The figure mainly reflected broadly unchanged prices for most categories. Higher prices for services related to transport were offset by lower prices for unprocessed food. Meanwhile, inflation came in at 1.4% in March, decelerating from February’s 1.6% print.

Core consumer prices, which exclude more volatile categories such as unprocessed food and energy, rose 0.2% in March on a monthly basis, slightly up from February’s 0.1% increase. Core inflation was 0.7% in March, marginally up from February’s 0.6% and the highest record in over a year. Finally, harmonized inflation came in at 1.3%, down from February’s 1.6%

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect inflation of 1.0% in 2017, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s projection. For 2018, panelists expect inflation to average 1.2%.
