Italy: Inflation falls in December

According to more detailed data for December, consumer prices were unchanged over the previous month, which contrasted the 0.2% decrease recorded in November and met the preliminary estimate. The figure reflects that lower prices for energy were offset by higher prices for services. Annual headline inflation edged down from 0.2% in November to a flat reading in December, which marked the lowest rate in three months.
Core consumer prices, which exclude more volatile categories, such as unprocessed food and energy, rose 0.2% in December over the previous month, which contrasted the 0.3% decrease recorded in November and marked the highest figure in four months. Annual core inflation inched up from 0.5% in November to 0.6% in December. Finally, annual HICP inflation averaged a record low 0.2% in December, which was down from the 0.3% seen in November.
