Italy: Annual consumer prices fall in February

February 29, 2016

According to preliminary estimates, consumer prices fell 0.2% in February over the previous month, which mirrored January’s decrease. The reading overshot market expectations of a softer 0.1% decrease. The fall mainly reflected decreases in prices of non-regulated energy products. Annual consumer prices fell 0.3% in February, which contrasted January’s 0.3% increase and marked the lowest reading in over a year.

Core consumer prices, which exclude more volatile categories such as unprocessed food and energy, recorded zero growth in February, which mirrored January’s result. Core inflation tallied 0.5% in February (January: 0.7%). Finally, annual harmonized consumer prices fell by 0.2% in February, which contrasted January’s 0.4% increase.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect inflation to average 0.1% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. For 2017, panelists expect inflation to average 0.9%.
