Italy: Growth in industrial production softens in March

May 10, 2017

Industrial output in Italy grew 0.4% in March on a month-on-month seasonally adjusted basis, down from the 1.0% increase registered in February but slightly overshooting analysts’ expectations of a 0.3% expansion. The slowdown came on the back of a softer expansion in the manufacturing sub-sector and declines in the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning and mining and quarrying sub-sectors.

On an annual basis, industrial production expanded a working-day adjusted 2.8% in March, accelerating from February’s 2.0% rise. Annual average growth in industrial output also improved, increasing from 1.7% in February to 1.9% in March.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see industrial production growing 1.2% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2018, panelists expect industrial output to expand 1.0%.
