Italy: Consumers less confident in July

July 24, 2014

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) consumer confidence index inched down from 105.6 points in June to 104.6 points in July. The figure came in below the 105.2 points the market had expected.

July’s reading reflected an across-the-board deterioration. Households’ expectations regarding the country’s economic situation as well as their willingness to make major purchases recorded the largest deteriorations over the previous month. In addition, consumers were more pessimistic regarding their personal economic situations than they were in June.

Panelists see private consumption increasing just 0.1% this year, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. Next year, the panel sees private consumption expanding 0.8%.
