Italy: Consumer confidence softens in April

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) consumer confidence index inched down from 110.7 points in March to 108.2 points in April. The result undershot market expectations of 110.4 points and broke a series of four consecutive increases.

March’s decrease reflected a deterioration in all of the subcomponents that comprise the index. Consumers’ expectations regarding the country’s general economic situation declined notably and reached a three-month low. In addition, households were more pessimistic regarding both their current and prospective personal economic situations.

Panelists expect private consumption to expand 0.6% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists see private consumption growing 0.8%.
