Italy: Consumer confidence rises in December

December 28, 2016

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) consumer confidence index increased from November’s 108.1 points to 111.1 points in December, marking the best result in five months.

December’s reading reflected a broad-based improvement in all components of the index. Particularly, households’ assessments of their personal economic situation recorded the best result since July 2002. Moreover, their assessments of both the current economic situation and their general economic expectations for the future improved, with the former recording the best result in eight months. Similarly, households’ assessments of their willingness to buy durable goods as well as of their future economic situation improved slightly and reached the best print in four months.

Panelists expect private consumption to expand 0.8% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2018, panelists see private consumption growing 0.9%.
