Italy: Consumer confidence rises above expectations in February
February 23, 2012
In February, the index of consumer sentiment published by ISTAT picked up to 94.2 points from 91.8 points in January, which had marked the lowest level since February 1996. The result largely beat market expectations, which had expected sentiment to improve to 92.1 points. The February print reflected improvements in households' assessment regarding the current economic situation as well as in short-term expectations on the Italian economy. In addition, respondents to the survey expressed more optimistic expectations regarding their personal financial situation. Prospects for purchases of durable goods, however, deteriorated notably compared to the previous month.
