Italy: Consumer confidence reaches six-month high in January

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) consumer confidence index increased from 99.9 points in December to 104.0 points in January, marking the highest reading since July 2014. The result overshot market expectations of the index inching up to 100.0 points.

January’s reading reflected an improvement in all of the subcomponents that comprise the index. Consumers’ expectations regarding the country’s general economic situation improved notably. In addition, households were more willing to buy compared to the previous month. Consumers were also more optimistic regarding both their current and prospective personal economic situations.

Panelists expect private consumption to expand 0.5% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists see private consumption growing 0.7%.
