Italy: Consumer confidence reaches lowest level in eight months

September 24, 2014

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) consumer confidence index inched down from 101.9 points in September to 101.4 points in October, thus reaching the lowest level in 8 months. The figure came in above the 101.0 points the market had expected.

October’s reading reflected a deterioration in most of the categories that compose the index. Households’ willingness to buy as well as their expectations regarding their personal economic situation deteriorated compared to the previous month. In addition, consumers’ sentiment regarding the country’s general economic situation was more pessimistic compared to September.

Panelists expect private consumption to expand 0.1% in 2014, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2015, panelists see private consumption growing 0.5%, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast.
