Italy: Consumer confidence opens year on a low note

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) consumer confidence index decreased from December’s 110.9 points to 108.8 points in January.

January’s reading reflected a broad-based deterioration in almost all components of the index. Particularly, households’ expectations for the general economic situation recorded the worst result since May 2013. Moreover, their assessments of both their current and future personal economic situation worsened, and their assessments of the general economic situation deteriorated significantly. Their willingness to buy durable goods was the only component that remained unchanged compared to December.

Panelists expect private consumption to expand 0.8% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2018, panelists see private consumption growing 0.9%.
