Italy: Consumer confidence inches up to highest level in over five years in May

May 15, 2014

The National Institute of Statistics (Istat) consumer confidence index inched up from 105.5 points in April to 106.3 points in May, which marked the highest level since January 2010. The figure overshot market expectations of a decrease to 104.9 points.

The reading mainly resulted from an improvement in households’ views on their personal economic situations. In addition, an improvement over the previous month was recorded in consumers’ opinions regarding the country’s general economic situation as well as their willingness to make major purchases.

Panelists see private consumption increasing just 0.1% this year, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. Next year, the panel sees private consumption expanding 0.8%.
