Italy: Consumer confidence in October reaches highest value since February 2002

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) consumer confidence index rose from 113.0 in September to 116.9 in October. The result significantly overshot market expectations that the index would record a decrease to 112.2 and marked the highest reading since February 2002.

October’s result reflected an increase in all the subcomponents that comprise the index. Consumers’ assessment regarding the general economic situation, in particular, rose to the highest level on record. Households were also more optimistic regarding their personal present and future economic situation.

Panelists expect private consumption to expand 0.6% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists see private consumption growing 0.8%, which is also down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast.
