Italy: Consumer confidence falls in May

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) consumer confidence index fell from 108.0 points in April to 105.7 points in May. The result undershot market expectations of a rise to 108.2 points and marked the lowest reading in four months.

April’s decrease reflected a deterioration in three out of five of the subcomponents that comprise the index. Consumers’ expectations regarding the country’s general economic situation declined notably and reached a four-month low. In addition, households’ willingness to buy fell to a three-month low. However, households were slightly less pessimistic regarding both their current and prospective personal economic situations.

Panelists expect private consumption to expand 0.6% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists see private consumption growing 0.8%.
