Italy: Consumer confidence deteriorates again in August

August 27, 2014

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) consumer confidence index fell from 104.4 points in July to 101.9 points in August, which is the lowest level in five months. The figure came in below the 104.0 points the market had expected.

August’s reading reflected an across-the-board deterioration. Households’ expectations regarding their personal economic situation as well as their willingness to make major purchases recorded the largest deteriorations over the previous month. In addition, consumers were more pessimistic regarding the country’s economic situation than they were in July.

Panelists see private consumption increasing just 0.1% this year, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. Next year, the panel sees private consumption expanding 0.8%.
