Italy: Consumer confidence decreases May

May 27, 2016

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) consumer confidence index declined from a revised 114.1 in April (previously reported: 114.2) to 112.7 in May. The result was below market expectations of a slight increase to 114.5 and marked a nine-month low.

May’s result reflected a deterioration in households’ assessment of both their current personal economic situations and the country’s economic situation. It also reflected a deterioration in households’ expectations regarding their future personal situation and the future of the economy.

Panelists expect private consumption to expand 1.2% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see private consumption growing 1.0%.
