Italy: Consumer confidence declines in February

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) consumer confidence index decreased from January’s 108.6 points to a five-month low of 106.6 points in February.

February’s reading reflected a broad-based deterioration in almost all components of the index. In particular, households’ expectations for their future personal economic situations recorded the worst result since January 2015, while their assessments of their current personal economic situations remained unchanged. Moreover, their assessments of both the current and future general economic situation worsened. Lastly, their willingness to buy durable goods declined, recording the worst result in over one-and-a-half years.

Panelists expect private consumption to expand 0.8% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2018, panelists see private consumption growing 0.9%.
