Italy: Consumer confidence continues to weaken in October

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) consumer confidence index decreased mildly from September’s revised 108.6 points (previously reported: 108.7) to 108.0 points in October, marking the worst result in 15 months.

October’s reading reflected a moderate deterioration in Italian households’ assessments of their willingness to buy and of their general economic expectations for the future, with the latter hitting the worst result in over two and a half years. On the other hand, households’ assessment of both their personal current and future economic situation improved. Lastly, their assessment of the current economic situation remained unchanged.

Panelists expect private consumption to expand 1.2% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see private consumption growing 0.8%, which is also unchanged from last month’s projection.
