Italy: Consumer confidence climbs to record high in January

January 28, 2016

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) consumer confidence index rose from 117.7 in December to 118.9 in January. The result came in above market expectations that the index would record a decrease to 117.0 and marked a multi-year high.

January’s result reflected an increase in two of the five subcomponents that comprise the index. In particular, households’ willing to buy big ticket items reached a multi-year high, which more than offset a deterioration of households’ assessment regarding the current general economic situation, which fell to a three-month low.

Panelists expect private consumption to expand 0.6% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see private consumption growing 1.1%.
