Italy: Consumer confidence climbs in March
March 26, 2012
In March, the index of consumer sentiment published by ISTAT rose to 96.8 points from 94.4 points in February, thus reaching the highest level since August 2011. The result defied market expectations, which had expected the index to drop to 93.5 points. The March print reflected a strong improvement in the households' assessment regarding the current economic situation and the labour market outlook. In addition, respondents to the survey expressed more optimistic expectations regarding their personal financial situation. Accordingly, prospects for purchases of durable goods improved notably compared to the previous month.
