Italy: Confidence in businesses deteriorates further in September

The National Institute of Statistics (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator), which covers the manufacturing, construction, service and retail sectors, fell from 88.1 points in August to 86.6 points in September, which marked the lowest level in nine months.

All of the components that comprise the index recorded a decrease compared to the previous month. The services and retail sectors recorded the largest decreases compared to the previous month, with each reaching the lowest level in nine months. The manufacturing sector fell from 95.4 points in August to 95.1 points in September and now sits at its lowest level since August 2013. In addition, the construction sector fell to 75.4 points in September (August: 76.7 points).

Panelists expect fixed investment to contract 1.0% in 2014, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2015, panelists see fixed investment growing 2.1%.
