Italy: Confidence among businesses improves in October

The National Institute of Statistics (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator), which covers the manufacturing, construction, service and retail sectors, bounced back from 86.9 points in September to 89.3 points in October, which represents the highest level in three months.

All of the components that comprise the index improved, compared to the previous month. The services and construction sectors recorded the largest increases compared to the previous month, with each reaching the highest level in three months. The manufacturing sector rose from 95.5 points in September to 96.0 points in October. In addition, the retail sector rose to 93.9 points in October (September: 92.1 points).

Panelists expect fixed investment to contract 1.8% in 2014, which is down 0.4 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2015, panelists see fixed investment growing 0.7%, which is down 0.6 percentage points from last month’s Consensus.
