Italy: Confidence among businesses improves in January

January 29, 2015

The National Institute of Statistics (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator), which covers the manufacturing, construction, service and retail sectors, increased from 87.6 points in December to 91.6 points in January. January’s reading was the highest level since August 2011.

January’s increase came as a result of an improvement in both the services and construction sectors. The services sector indicator increased from 86.8 points in December to 94.7 points in January. January’s figure marked the highest reading since June 2011. The construction index rose from December’s 72.6 points to 77.3 points. Conversely, the manufacturing and retail sectors deteriorated in January compared to the previous month.

Panelists expect fixed investment to contract 1.8% in 2015, which is down 0.4 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists see fixed investment growing 0.7%.
