Italy: Business confidence moderates in July

The National Institute of Statistics (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator), which covers the manufacturing, construction, service and retail sectors, inched down from a revised 104.7 in June (previously reported: 104.3) to 104.3 in July.

Two out of four categories decreased compared to the previous month. The construction index, in particular, marked the sharpest fall, dropping from 119.7 in June to 117.6 in July. However, the services index inched up from 109.2 in June to 110.0 in July, thus reaching its highest value since June 2007.

Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 0.1% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists see fixed investment growing 2.0%.

    The National Institute of Statistics (Istat)’s composite business confidence indicator (Clima di Fiducia delle Imprese Italiane, IESE)—which covers the manufacturing, construction, services and retail sectors—rose to 108.7 points in February, above January’s 105.6 points. The strengthening came mainly on the back of a notable improvement in sentiment in the market services and construction sectors, in which expectations on future sales grew significantly.
