Italy: Business confidence moderates in April

April 29, 2015

The National Institute of Statistics (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator), which covers the manufacturing, construction, service and retail sectors, inched down from 103.0 points in March to 102.1 points in April.

April’s decrease resulted from a deterioration in both services and construction which contrasted improvements in manufacturing output and retail. Services posted the sharpest decrease, falling from 108.1 points in March to 104.4 in April, while retail rose from 103.0 in March to 105.9 in April, recording the highest increase and reaching an over four-year high.

Panelists expect fixed investment to record flat growth in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists see fixed investment growing 1.9%.
