Italy: Business confidence falls further in May

May 28, 2014

The National Institute of Statistics (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator), which covers the manufacturing, construction, service and retail sectors, inched down from 88.8 points in April to 86.9 points in May.

May’s decrease was driven by a fall in construction as well as in services. Conversely, retail rose from 98.0 points in April to 98.7 points in May, which marked the highest level since June 2011. Meanwhile, the manufacturing sector was unchanged from the previous month.

Panelists expect fixed investment to contract 1.0% in 2014, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2015, panelists see fixed investment growing 2.1%.
