Italy: Business confidence deteriorates in August

The National Institute of Statistics (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator), which covers the manufacturing, construction, service and retail sectors, fell from 90.8 points in July to 88.2 points in August.

All of the components that comprise the index recorded a decrease compared to the previous month. The construction and services sectors recorded the largest decreases, with each reaching the lowest levels in three months. The manufacturing sector fell from 99.1 points in July to 95.7 points in August and now sits at its lowest level since August 2013. In addition, the retail sector fell to 98.3 points (July: 101.4 points).

Panelists expect fixed investment to contract 1.0% in 2014, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2015, panelists see fixed investment growing 2.1%.
