December 29, 2016

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator), which covers the manufacturing, construction, service and retail sectors, dropped from 101.4 in November to 100.3 in December.

Two out of the four categories of the indicator deteriorated compared to November: construction and services, with the former hitting a seven-month low. Conversely, the retail and manufacturing sectors both improved to a 12-month high in December.

Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 1.4% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2018, panelists see fixed investment growing 1.9%.
