Italy: Business confidence continues its ascent in April

April 28, 2017

The National Institute of Statistics (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator), which covers the manufacturing, construction, service and retail sectors, rose from 105.1 in March to a multi-year high of 107.4 in April.

All four categories of the indicator improved compared to March, with manufacturing registering the strongest result in over nine years on the back of higher order books and production expectations, while construction registered the best reading since April 2008 due to improved assessments regarding construction plans and higher employment expectations.

Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 1.4% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2018, panelists see fixed investment growing 1.9%.
