Indonesia: Retail sales surge in June

August 16, 2017

In June, retail sales increased 6.3% over the same month last year, above May’s 4.3% increase. The notable pick-up was largely due to a seasonal spike in demand caused by Ramadhan and Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. Sales of food and beverages jumped over 10% in June and sales of other goods also rose notably.

The trend pointed downwards in June and annual average growth came in at a multi-year low of 7.1%, after recording 7.9% in May. According to the survey, retailers expect sales to plummet in July and fall 3.0%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see private consumption rising 5.1% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2018, panelists see growth in private consumption at 5.2%.
