Indonesia Retail April 2017

Indonesia: Retail sales growth stabilizes in April

June 16, 2017

In April, retail sales increased 4.2% over the same month last year, matching March’s reading. The result was driven by an uptick in food sales, while sales of information and communication equipment fell. In month-on-month terms, retail sales increased 1.2% in April compared to March’s 3.5% growth.

The trend pointed downward in April and recorded the lowest level in over five years. Annual average growth fell to 8.7% compared to the previous month’s 9.3%. Respondents indicated that they expect retail sales to grow faster in May and rise 4.5% on the back of a strong increase in food sales.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see private consumption rising 5.1% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2018, panelists see growth in private consumption at 5.2%.
