Indonesia: Retail sales growth inches up in May

In May, retail sales increased 4.3% over the same month last year, inching up from April’s reading. Behind the result was an uptick in sales of food, beverages and tobacco as well as culture and recreational goods.

The trend pointed downwards in May and annual average growth came in at an over five-year low of 7.9%, after recording 8.7% in April. According to the survey, retailers expect sales to pick up in June and grow 7.9%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see private consumption rising 5.1% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2018, panelists see growth in private consumption at 5.2%.
