Indonesia: Retail sales growth accelerates in September

November 10, 2014

Retail sales in September expanded 17.9% over the same month last year, according to Bank Indonesia’s Retail Sales Survey (RSS). The expansion roughly doubled the revised 8.9% rise observed in August (previously reported: +9.0% year-on-year). According to the Bank, September’s expansion was driven by strong growth of sales of information and communication equipment, as well as of food, beverages, and tobacco.

Annual average growth in retail sales inched up from 16.3% in August to 16.9% in September, which represented the highest result since February 2011. According to the survey, retailers expect sales to strengthen in September to a 19.3% annual growth rate.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see private consumption rising 5.1% in 2014, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2015, panelists see growth in private consumption at 5.2%.
