Indonesia: Growth in retail sales rises in March

Retail sales in March expanded 11.6% over the same month last year, according to Bank Indonesia’s Retail Sales Survey (RSS). The expansion was above the revised 10.6% increase (previously reported: +9.9% year-on-year) observed in the previous month. According to the Bank, March’s acceleration was partly driven by higher growth of motor vehicles, parts and accessories, along with information and communication equipment.

Annual average growth in retail sales edged down from a revised 13.0% in February (previously reported: +12.9%) to 12.4% in March. According to the survey, retailers expect sales to ease in April to an 11.3% annual increase.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see private consumption rising 5.1% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see growth in private consumption at 5.2%.
