Indonesia: Growth in retail sales picks up in August

Retail sales in August expanded 14.4% over the same month last year, according to Bank Indonesia’s Retail Sales Survey (RSS). The expansion was above the revised 6.3% increase observed in the previous month (previously reported: +6.8% year-on-year). According to the Bank, August’s acceleration was driven chiefly by higher sales of food, beverages and tobacco.

Annual average growth in retail sales rose from 10.4% in July to 11.1% in August. According to the survey, retailers expect sales to rise to a 15.7% annual increase in September.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see private consumption rising 5.1% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see growth in private consumption at 5.2%.
