Indonesia Retail September 2016

Indonesia: Growth in retail sales moderates in September

November 14, 2016

Retail sales in September expanded 6.6% over the same month last year, according to Bank Indonesia’s Retail Sales Survey (RSS). The expansion was below the revised 11.4% increase observed in the previous month (previously reported: +14.4% year-on-year). According to the Bank, September’s deceleration was driven partly by slower growth in sales of food, beverages and tobacco.

Annual average growth in retail sales was stable at August’s 10.8% in September. According to the survey, retailers expect sales to fall to a 5.2% annual increase in October.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see private consumption rising 5.1% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see growth in private consumption at 5.2%, which is also unchanged from the previous month’s projection.
