Indonesia: Growth in retail sales eases in February

Retail sales in February expanded 9.9% over the same month last year, according to Bank Indonesia’s Retail Sales Survey (RSS). The expansion was below the 12.9% increase observed in the previous month and marked the lowest print in three months. According to the Bank, February’s moderation was partly driven by slower growth of motor vehicles, parts and accessories, along with information and communication equipment.

Annual average growth in retail sales edged down from 13.4% in January to 12.9% in February. According to the survey, retailers expect sales to ease in March to a 9.6% annual increase.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see private consumption rising 5.1% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see growth in private consumption at 5.2%.
