Indonesia: Growth in retail sales accelerates in September

Retail sales in September expanded 7.2% over the same month last year, according to Bank Indonesia’s Retail Sales Survey (RSS). The expansion was above the revised 5.8% rise observed in the previous month (previously reported: +5.4% year-on-year). According to the Bank, September’s increase was driven mainly by strong sales of information and communication equipment.

Annual average growth in retail sales fell from 14.4% in August to 13.5% in September, which marked the lowest reading in seven months. According to the survey, retailers expect sales to moderate in November to a 5.8% annual increase.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see private consumption rising 4.9% in 2015, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists see growth in private consumption at 5.1%, which is unchanged from last month’s estimate.
