Indonesia: Growth in retail sales accelerates in November

January 10, 2017

Retail sales in November expanded 10.1% over the same month of the previous year, according to Bank Indonesia’s Retail Sales Survey (RSS). The expansion was above the revised 8.1% increase observed in October (previously reported: +7.6% year-on-year). According to the Bank, November’s acceleration was driven partly by faster growth in sales of food, beverages and tobacco. In addition, sales of motor vehicles, parts and accessories picked up pace.

Annual average growth in retail sales was unchanged at October’s 11.1%. According to the survey, retailers expect sales to have risen to a 10.5% annual increase in December.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see private consumption rising 5.2% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2018, panelists see growth in private consumption at 5.3%.
