Indonesia: Growth in retail sales accelerates in December

Retail sales in December expanded 10.4% over the same month of the previous year, according to Bank Indonesia’s Retail Sales Survey (RSS). The expansion was above the 9.7% increase observed in the previous month and marked the highest print in six months. According to the Bank, December’s increase was driven mainly by strong sales of motor vehicles, parts and accessories along with automotive fuels.

Annual average growth in retail sales increased from 12.6% in November, which had marked the lowest reading in two years, to 13.2%. According to the survey, retailers expect sales to pick up in January to a 11.7% annual increase.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see private consumption rising 5.1% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see growth in private consumption at 5.3%.
