Guatemala: Economic activity expands at the fastest pace in nearly seven years

In August, economic activity increased 5.2% over the same month last year, according to the monthly indicator for economic activity (IMAE, Indice Mensual de la Actividad Economica). The expansion was an improvement over the 5.0% rise observed in July and marked the fastest growth rate since September 2007.

As a result, annual average growth in economic activity inched up from 3.8% in July to 3.9% in August.

The Central Bank expects the economy to grow between 3.3% and 3.9% in 2014. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see GDP growing 3.6% in 2014, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2015, panelists expect the economy to expand 3.5%.
