Greece: Unemployment rate improves slightly in August

The number of unemployed fell by 15,741 in August, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (EL.STAT.). August’s fall was an improvement from July’s more modest 3,282 decrease in persons unemployed.

The unemployment rate fell in August, decreasing from 24.9% in July to 24.6%. In addition, August’s figure was above that of the same month last year (August 2014: 26.2%). Despite the improvements registered over the past year, Greece’s unemployment rate is still well above the Eurozone average.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect unemployment to average 25.9% in 2015. For 2016, the panel expects the unemployment rate to average 25.9%.
